A Pretty Prairie man who appeared in court Friday was found guilty of what local officials say is among the most bizarre crimes they've come across.

Joshua Brian Coman, 20, waived his right to an attorney, pleaded no contest and was sentenced Friday for criminal sodomy of an animal, which is a misdemeanor in Kansas.

According to police reports and court records, Coman was arrested Sept. 23 in the 2000 block of East Parallel on suspicion of cruelty to an animal - a large, Rottweiler-type dog - and lewd and lascivious behavior. He was taken to Reno County Jail, where he later posted $1,750 bond.

Capt. Wayne Baughman, with the Reno County Sheriff's Office, said more than one eyewitness, including neighbors, "saw it happening and called it in." He said a veterinarian examined the injuries to the dog.

"I've never seen a case like this before," Baughman said.

Judge Randy McEwen sentenced Coman to six months of probation, more than $300 in fees and fines and ordered Coman to obtain a mental health evaluation. Assistant District Attorney Greg Benefiel recommended the mental health evaluation as part of Coman's sentence.

"Because of the nature of the charges, I thought the mental health evaluation was appropriate," he said.

Sodomy is considered a crime in Kansas, and Benefiel said that criminal sodomy of an animal falls under the same statute as criminal sodomy between two consenting adults. "Criminal sodomy only becomes a felony if it involves a minor," he said.

Coman declined to comment on the case.
